01 / Context

Project Overview

Ensign Manufacturing required a dedicated fabricated slide gate valve engineered specifically for integration into a dry materials dosing system. Standard commercial slide valves often introduce bulk, weight and mounting constraints that fail to fit neatly between upstream storage hoppers and downstream feeding equipment.

Cadrill was engaged to design a custom valve assembly from the ground up, focusing on a robust fabricated construction using sheet-metal components, welded structural stiffeners, integrated gate guides and practical sealing arrangements.

The Engineering Challenge

Slide gate valves deployed in dosing and bulk-handling processes must maintain smooth blade actuation while preventing dust egress and material jamming in the guide tracks. In a fabricated design, managing weld distortion and maintaining blade flatness are paramount to achieving reliable perimeter sealing without causing high friction during actuation.

Engineering Priority: Industrial valves must be designed directly around the actual process and workshop fabrication capabilities. Sheet metal bend geometry, weld joint accessibility and blade clearance tracks had to be harmonised in 3D CAD before cutting and forming steel plates.

The design required clear blade-support rails, accessible seal retaining bars and a rigid mounting framework capable of bolting directly between adjacent system ductwork flanges.

Cadrill's Design Approach

Using Autodesk Inventor, Cadrill developed the complete mechanical assembly:

Fabricated Body & Weldments: The outer valve housing was engineered using laser-cut and folded sheet-metal plates. Continuous and intermittent weldments were positioned strategically to provide structural stiffness while minimising heat distortion across the blade sliding plane.

Gate Blade & Sealing Arrangement: The sliding gate blade was modelled with precise side clearances and bevelled leading edges to cleanly cut through bulk material flow during closure. Seal retainers were designed to be readily accessible for maintenance without requiring complete dismantling of the valve body.

Drive & Actuator Mounting: Mounting brackets and guide rails were integrated directly into the structural frame, ensuring consistent alignment between the actuating mechanism and the sliding gate.

Project Outcome

The detailed engineering drawings and 3D CAD models enabled Ensign Manufacturing to fabricate the slide gate valve efficiently and accurately. By designing the valve around actual manufacturing processes and real-world installation clearances, the client achieved a dependable dosing valve that integrated smoothly into their production line.
