Project Overview
Luhr Filter, an established name in industrial air pollution control and filtration systems, required custom engineering design support for a pipe heating gate and process filtration assembly. The installation involved a complex intersection of thermal heat-sink surfaces, process piping runs, fabricated isolation gate valves and structural support frameworks.
Cadrill was commissioned to model the complete assembly parametrically in Autodesk Inventor, routing connecting pipework in accordance with ASME flange standards and relevant BS EN mechanical design guidelines, and providing fabrication-ready drawings for the shop floor.
The Engineering Challenge
Industrial filtration assemblies must operate reliably under challenging plant conditions. The arrangement required coordinating heat-sink structures and flow-routing components within a confined structural envelope while ensuring pipe runs aligned precisely with mating equipment connections.
The design required careful management of weld joint accessibility, flanged bolt-circle clearances, thermal expansion clearances along pipe runs and clean transitions into the fabricated gate-valve body.
Cadrill's Design Approach
Using Autodesk Inventor, Cadrill developed an integrated 3D CAD model linking all mechanical systems:
Heat-Sink & Filter Integration: The heat-sink geometry and filter housing were detailed in 3D to ensure optimum surface exposure, structural integrity and easy maintenance access during plant operation.
Piping Route & ASME Flange Standards: Process pipe spools were routed cleanly through the assembly, integrating standard ASME flange ratings, bolt patterns and gasket seating considerations to guarantee seamless site bolt-up with client plant interfaces.
Fabricated Gate Valve Design: The isolation gate valve was modelled as a heavy-duty fabricated weldment with reinforced sheet-metal outer casing, precision gate guides and reliable sealing seats.
3D CAD Assemblies & System Layout
Manufacture-Ready Design
To streamline workshop fabrication and pipe spool manufacturing, Cadrill produced a comprehensive engineering drawing package:
- Isometric pipe spool fabrication drawings with dimensional coordinates, weld neck flange callouts and cut lengths.
- Flat-pattern sheet-metal drawings for laser cutting and CNC press-brake folding.
- Weldment assembly drawings specifying weld types, structural stiffeners and fabrication tolerances.
- Itemised Bills of Materials (BOM) identifying pipe fittings, flanges, fasteners and fabricated components.
Project Outcome
Cadrill's detailed 3D CAD modelling and manufacture-ready drawings provided Luhr Filter with an accurate, clash-free mechanical design ready for workshop production. By accounting for ASME flange interfaces and BS EN guidelines early in the CAD process, the fabrication team avoided costly workshop alterations and ensured smooth on-site installation.
