01 / Context

Project Overview

Ensign Manufacturing required a fabricated butterfly damper valve engineered specifically for industrial air and gas flow-control applications. In many plant ducting and process installations, standard cast valves lack the required custom flange dimensions, lightweight fabricated profiles or tailored shaft-lever geometries necessary to integrate into existing duct routes.

Cadrill was commissioned to complete the mechanical design from initial concept through to workshop-ready fabrication drawings in SolidWorks, incorporating fabricated sheet-metal casings, welded structural flanges, precision shaft pivot bearings and reliable blade perimeter sealing.

The Engineering Challenge

Fabricated damper valves must maintain true circular or rectangular bore geometry during welding and assembly so that the rotating butterfly blade seals reliably without jamming against the valve casing walls. In high-cycle flow-control systems, shaft deflection, bearing wear and thermal expansion must all be accommodated within the mechanical arrangement.

Flow-Control Engineering: The damper valve had to deliver dependable flow-regulation and shut-off characteristics using a fabricated sheet-metal body, welded mounting flanges, an integrated shaft bearing assembly and an ergonomic manual quadrant lever for repeatable blade angle setting.

The design required balancing low resistance to flow in the fully open position with robust blade support and accessible gland sealing packing to prevent external process leakage along the operating shaft.

Cadrill's Design Approach

Using SolidWorks, Cadrill engineered a robust, manufacture-ready damper valve assembly:

Fabricated Body & Flanged Connections: The valve casing was formed from rolled and welded steel plate, fitted with precision laser-cut companion flanges drilled to suit client duct specifications. Weld joints were positioned to ensure post-weld roundness and easy access for workshop inspection.

Butterfly Disc & Shaft Arrangement: The central rotating disc was reinforced with welded structural ribs to resist aerodynamic deflection. A high-strength through-shaft was pinned securely to the blade, supported by external low-friction bushing housings mounted away from the casing to protect bearings.

Manual Quadrant & Sealing Detailing: A notched quadrant plate with an indexed locking lever was incorporated into the design, allowing plant operators to set and secure discrete damper blade angles during flow balancing. Sealing seats were detailed with replaceable elastomer or metallic retaining stops.

Manufacture-Ready Design

To allow Ensign Manufacturing’s fabrication team to manufacture the valve directly without guesswork, Cadrill prepared an all-inclusive 2D and 3D drawing set:

Project Outcome

The completed SolidWorks engineering package provided Ensign Manufacturing with a fully validated, fabricated butterfly damper valve design. Built directly from Cadrill's drawings, the valve delivered smooth, repeatable flow modulation, robust flanged sealing and dependable workshop manufacturability, meeting all operational criteria for the client's process installation.
