Project Overview
iFi Audio, recognised globally for high-performance personal and home audio systems, engaged Cadrill to assist with early-stage physical product design and industrial concept development for a new amplifier enclosure. The brief required developing a distinctive aesthetic form that aligned with high-fidelity brand expectations while respecting the physical enclosure constraints needed to protect delicate hardware.
Cadrill’s involvement centred on turning initial concept sketches into detailed 3D geometric CAD models, exploring material choices, evaluating manufacturing feasibility (including casting and machining parameters), and producing high-resolution KeyShot visualisations.
The Engineering Challenge
Premium audio equipment requires a harmonious balance between visual poise, tactile quality and manufacturing realities. The physical enclosure must accommodate front-panel user interfaces, rear connection ports and thermal dissipation paths without compromising clean lines or structural rigidity.
The design required precise curvature transitions, uniform wall thicknesses to facilitate potential casting or extrusion processes, and exact chassis split lines that maintain an uninterrupted, premium appearance.
Cadrill's Design Approach
Cadrill adopted a structured industrial design and CAD development pathway:
Product Form Development: Exploring multiple volumetric proposals in 3D CAD, refining chamfer radii, front bezel contours, recessed knob housings and dial proportioning to achieve a commanding yet refined desktop presence.
Material & Casting Feasibility: The external body was modelled with constant wall thicknesses, appropriate draft angles and integrated internal mounting bosses, ensuring that the visual concept remained fully viable for casting or CNC machining.
KeyShot Photorealistic Visualisation: The 3D geometry was imported into KeyShot to simulate realistic material textures, including anodised metallic finishes, brushed surfaces, bead-blasted textures and optical reflections under studio lighting scenarios.
Enclosure Geometry & Studio Renderings
Manufacture-Ready Design
Unlike purely artistic industrial concepts that require extensive re-engineering, Cadrill's work was generated directly in 3D CAD with manufacturing requirements embedded from day one:
- Accurate 3D CAD solid models with defined wall sections, draft considerations and parting planes.
- Mounting provisions and fastener standoffs configured for internal sub-chassis assemblies.
- Manufacturing consideration for die-casting, extrusion or multi-axis CNC machining processes.
- Engineering drawings and dimensioned layout views to communicate packaging intent to production partners.
Project Outcome
The completed concept package provided iFi Audio with a visually striking, technically grounded physical design. By pairing parametric 3D CAD geometry with studio-grade KeyShot renderings, internal stakeholders and engineering teams could evaluate aesthetic proportion, ergonomics and manufacturing feasibility long before cutting tooling.
